What should you expect from a first tattoo?
Expect a conversation before anything else. You share your idea, we write back, and we shape the design, placement and size together before a session date is agreed. Nothing happens on the day that you have not already talked through.
Then comes the session itself, and afterwards a few weeks of looking after the skin while it heals. Knowing these stages in advance takes away most of the uncertainty.
You are also welcome to ask anything, however small it seems. How long does a session take for a small design? Where should I wear it? What if I want to wait? Questions like these are the best way to feel ready.
How do you choose an idea and placement without rushing?
Give yourself time. A tattoo that has stayed in your mind for a while is usually a better sign than an impulse. If you only have a feeling or a rough picture, that is a good place to start.
For placement, think about how often you want to see the tattoo, who else will see it, and how the skin there moves and takes the sun. A smaller, simpler first tattoo in a place that is easy to look after is a gentle way to begin. We can talk this through, and you can change your mind at any point before the session.
How do you prepare, and does it hurt?
Most people describe the feeling as scratching, stinging or heat, which is usually easy to manage for small tattoos. How strong it feels depends on the area of the body, the size, how long the session lasts and how you are feeling that day. Tell your artist if you need a moment.
A few simple habits help, and they are common advice before any tattoo.
- Keep your skin moisturised in the days before
- Avoid sunburn on the area in the weeks before
- Sleep well and eat a proper meal beforehand
- Avoid alcohol before the session
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- Tell us about any health condition or medication, and speak to your doctor if you are unsure
What happens in the session, and afterwards?
In general, you can expect a clean workspace, single-use needles, gloves and sealed consumables from any professional studio, and you are welcome to ask us about our setup. The design and placement are checked with you before the tattoo begins.
Afterwards, you receive aftercare guidance. In broad terms, keep the tattoo clean, moisturise as instructed, avoid soaking and direct sun while it heals, which usually takes around two to four weeks depending on the person and the tattoo, and follow your artist's instructions. If you notice spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus or fever, contact a doctor.
Questions people ask
Do I need a finished design for my first tattoo?
No. Many first-timers begin with a feeling or a loose idea. We shape it with you before anything is decided.
What if I change my mind?
That is fine, and better said early. A request is not a confirmed booking, and you can take your time before the idea feels right.
Should I choose a small first tattoo?
Not necessarily, but a smaller design in an easy-to-care-for area is a gentle way to learn how you feel about the process. It is your decision.
Can I bring someone with me?
You are welcome to ask us about this when we agree your session. Having support can help you feel at ease.
Take your time, we will too
If you are thinking about your first tattoo, send us your idea on WhatsApp or through the request form. Questions are welcome, and there is no pressure to decide.
A request is not a confirmed appointment; we write back to you.

Does a tattoo hurt?
Yes, a tattoo is uncomfortable, but for most people it is manageable. How much it hurts depends on the area, the size, the length of the session and how you feel that day.

Tattoo aftercare
How you look after a tattoo in the first weeks matters as much as the session. This is general guidance only, and your artist's own instructions always come first.
