Tattoos, sun, sea and pool
A fresh tattoo and a beach holiday do not mix well. Here is what to avoid, for how long, and how to protect your tattoo once it has healed, so you can enjoy the coast and keep the line clear.

Can I swim or sunbathe with a new tattoo?
Not until it has healed. Most studios advise avoiding soaking in the sea, in a pool or in a bath, and avoiding direct sun on the tattoo, until the skin has closed and finished peeling. That is usually around two to four weeks, depending on the person and the tattoo.
A fresh tattoo is an open wound in the medical sense, even though it looks calm. Water that is not clean can carry bacteria, and strong sun can irritate the skin and affect how the colour and line settle.
Your artist will give you instructions for your own tattoo. If they differ from the general points here, follow your artist's instructions.
Why the sea, the pool and the sand are a problem
Sea water contains salt, sand and everything that lives in it. Salt can dry and sting the skin, and sand is abrasive on a tender area.
Pools bring a different issue. Chlorine can dry and irritate healing skin, and a busy hotel pool is shared by many people. A short rinse in the shower is not the same thing as soaking in a pool.
Sand also travels. A beach towel, a sun lounger and a bag of sandy clothes all touch the area. If you are on the beach in the early days, keep the tattoo clean, covered as your artist advises, and away from contact.
- Sea: salt, sand and unclean water
- Pool: chlorine and shared water
- Bath and hot tub: long soaking softens healing skin
- Beach: sand, towels and sweat
Sun while it heals, and sun protection after
While the tattoo is healing, keep it out of direct sun. Loose, light, clean clothing over the area is a simple answer in a warm climate. Do not apply sunscreen to a tattoo that has not healed unless your artist tells you it is fine.
Once it has healed, sun protection becomes a habit. Sunlight is one of the main reasons tattoos lose clarity over the years, and fine lines show it first. A high-factor sunscreen on the tattoo, reapplied during long beach days, helps it stay crisp.
A hat, shade and covering the area at midday are as useful as any cream.
Practical tips if you are on holiday
If your trip is short, tell us your arrival and departure dates when you write. We can talk about timing and about placements that are easier to keep covered, like the upper arm, the back or the thigh, and less exposed than a foot or a hand.
Plan the tattoo for early in the stay rather than the last days, if you can, and plan some beach-free time afterwards. Availability is arranged by message, so write early.
Whatever happens, watch the tattoo. If you notice spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus or fever, contact a doctor.
A realistic plan for a beach trip
A tattoo does not have to ruin a holiday, but it does ask for some adjustment. Think of the first two weeks as a quieter chapter: shade instead of loungers, walks instead of long swims, a shower instead of a soak.
Pack a few practical things. Loose, light, clean clothes that cover the area, a spare change of clothing if you sweat, and the aftercare instructions saved on your phone are more useful than any gadget.
If you expect a lot of time on a boat, a beach or in a pool, tell us when you write. It may be wiser to plan the tattoo for the end of a longer stay, or for a calmer visit, than to compromise the healing.
Questions people ask
How long should I stay out of the sea after a tattoo?
Most studios advise avoiding the sea until the tattoo has healed, usually around two to four weeks, depending on the person and the tattoo. Your artist will tell you what applies to yours.
Can I use sunscreen on a fresh tattoo?
Not unless your artist says so. Cover the area with loose clothing while it heals, and use sunscreen once it has healed.
Is a hotel pool safer than the sea?
Neither is recommended for a fresh tattoo. Chlorine and shared water can irritate healing skin, so wait until it has healed.
Can I shower normally?
Yes, a gentle shower is part of ordinary aftercare. Avoid long soaking and follow your artist's washing instructions.
