Can any tattoo be covered?

Many old tattoos can be covered or reworked, but not all of them, and not always the way people hope. What decides it is the old tattoo, the new design and an honest look at both.

Can any tattoo be covered?

Not any, and an honest artist will say so. A tattoo can only be covered with something that hides it, and tattoo ink does not hide itself. The new design has to be planned around what is already there.

That is why we assess each case individually. Sometimes the answer is yes, with a design that works with the old shapes. Sometimes it is a larger design, a different placement of the new idea or a different approach altogether.

Occasionally the honest advice is to wait, or to lighten the old tattoo first. We would rather tell you that than promise something that will not look good.

What makes a cover-up easier or harder

The old tattoo is the first factor. Light, thin, faded or small tattoos are generally easier to cover than dark, dense, saturated or large ones. Heavy black areas are the most demanding.

Placement matters too. The shape of the body, the movement of the skin and the visibility of the area all affect what design can work. Scarring or uneven skin from the old tattoo also plays a part.

Size is a trade-off. A cover-up is often larger than the original so that it can hide it properly, and a very small cover for a bigger tattoo rarely works.

  • Easier: light, small or faded old tattoos
  • Harder: dark, dense or large old tattoos
  • Easier: placements with room to grow the design
  • Harder: areas with scarring or uneven texture

How a designer thinks about a cover-up

A good cover-up is not simply a dark patch. The designer studies the old lines and works with them, using shapes, shading and composition so the earlier tattoo becomes part of the new one, not a shadow behind it.

Subjects with texture and flow, such as botanical or organic compositions, often suit this well, while a very delicate, light design on top of a dark tattoo usually will not.

That means the new design may differ from the first image in your mind. We talk it through together, and you decide what you are comfortable with.

Laser lightening, and the photos that help

Some people lighten an old tattoo with laser before a cover-up, to give the new design more room. It is a separate procedure carried out by laser specialists, usually takes several sessions with healing between them, and results vary. We can talk about whether waiting makes sense for your case.

To get an honest first opinion, send a clear photo of the old tattoo in good daylight, straight on, with no filter. Add a second photo from the side if the area curves, and a small object or hand for scale.

Tell us what you want instead, and what you dislike about the current tattoo. We will write back with what we see.

What to decide before you write

It helps to know why you want the old tattoo covered. Is it the design, the quality, the colour, the meaning or simply that your taste has changed? The answer shapes what we propose.

It also helps to be open. Some people arrive with a fixed image and no flexibility, and that is where cover-ups go wrong. If you are willing to let the new design follow the old one, you will usually have more options.

There is no obligation in asking. A message is not a booking, and hearing an honest view costs you nothing but a photo and a few sentences.

Questions people ask

  • Can a black tattoo be covered?

Sometimes, but it is usually the most demanding case. It often needs a larger and darker design, and each case is assessed honestly.

  • Will the old tattoo show through?

A well-planned cover-up is designed so it does not. The honest assessment is part of the first conversation.

  • Do I need laser first?

Not always. Some cases are better with lightening first, others do not need it. We will give an honest view once we see the photos.

  • What should I send?

A clear, well-lit photo of the old tattoo, plus a few words about what you want. A request is not a booking, so you can simply ask.
